Al Hirschfeld
The legendary Al Hirschfeld (1904-2003) drew caricatures for
more than 80 years, and his satirical drawings have appeared
in the pages of The New York Times for more than 70 years. (He
started hiding his daughter Nina’s name in the hair, wrinkles,
clothing and accessories of his portrait subjects in 1945.)
The “Line King” whose pen-and-ink drawings are now
as emblematic of the New York theater scene as Sardi’s
or Times Square started his career in the publicity and advertising
departments of the Hollywood studios, ultimately creating film
art for MGM for 33 years. Hirschfeld’s works are included
in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum, the Museum of
Modern Art in New York, the Whitney Museum, and Harvard University’s
Fogg Museum, among many others.
